Sights of
Interests
There are plenty of Roman
buildings to be visited in the area. Most famous are the
abbeys of Cluny and Tournus, but also smaller ones, like the
monastery of Brancion and the church in Chissey-lès-Mâcon are
certainly worth visiting.
The Route des Châteaux will
lead you to about 17 castles in the region, and there
are more to be visited.
The many museums of
all kinds and all sizes are very interesting.
Art galeries
and studios, of painters and ceramists are usually open for
public during the high season.
Cluny
Did you know that Europe
once was governed from a picturesque village only 20 km from
Bierre?
Cluny is renowned for the
richest and largest Monastery of Benedictines in the early
Middle Ages. It has been founded in 909 A.D. as the
headquarters of over a thousand monasteries and Cluny became
the main medieval monastic order in the Western world.
In the 13th
century Cluny falls into decay and the order falls apart. The
Monastery existed until the French Revolution, after which
most of it was demolished, except for the south side en the
westerly transept of the church and part of monastery
buildings. See also

Cormatin
The Château of Cormatin,
situated about 10 km from Bierre, is absolutely worth
visiting. Especially the interior, with its richly decorated
drawing-rooms full of Louis XIII furniture and XIIth century
gobelins are a feast for the eyes. The gardens surrounding the
Château are very famous for their circle-shaped beds. More
