About Châtel De Bierre

Our “Maison Bourgeoise” is
beyond any doubt the eldest and largest house in the hamlet of
Bierre, situated between Saint Ythaire and Sigy-le-Châtel.
It’s on the border of the Mâconnais and the Charolais area.
That is where the famous cows are from.
In the past century the
premises and the garden were divided and belonged to two
families. One part met the “modern demands” of 1914. The
rebuilding and modernisation of this part is still going on
and is in use as “the dwelling house”. The other part of the
house is a 4 to 6 person holiday-home. In the past the
buildings in the yard served as a pigeon-house, bakery,
stables, barns, wine growing-material etc. and now serve
either as a storehouse of bric-a-brac or brocante-furniture
store.
In the past, our house has
had several functions and has always been inhabitated by large
families. The surrounding houses in the hamlet mainly served as housing for
personnel. For years it used to be a wine-farm of which the
enormous wine-vaults still show now-a-days.
Several authentic details
are still intact, like the original beamed ceilings “à la
française” (3,5m high) , the old tiled floors in some
apartments and the castle like stone flight of stairs in the
centre of our house.
From our garden there is a
beautiful view on the historical village of Sigy-le-Châtel
with its church and thirteenth century castle and the valley
towards Cluny. When the sky is clear, you can look as far as
the mountains of the Beaujolais.
In the garden there are
lots of old fruit trees. Recently new fruit trees and berries
have been planted and a kitchen garden provides us with
season-vegetables.
